The amphibian population of the United Kingdom is in critical decline and faces long term survival challenges of almost overwhelming proportions. The main reasons for this fall being pollution, disease and habitat deprivation. When i think myself back to my childhood days I recollect many a fine day as a boy with my friends at the local ponds or the brook, endless summer daytimes catching frogs and newts and sticklebacks (we always let them go!). It was a terrific childhood.

A few years ago I travelled back to the region I grew up in, in that location is now a car park where those fantastic old pools were. The brook is fouled and looked stagnant and devoid of life. These days in our over-developed urban areas such habitats are getting rarer and rarer.

The complete number of habitats lost to development has been catastrophic and never-ending. The development of many wetland sites has been checked when discovered to be home to natterjack toads or great-crested newts, our 2 rarest amphibians.

Why Should You Maintain Your Garden Tools? – Yard Tool Maintenance Tips

If you are interested in prolonging the life of your gardening tools and care about preventing injuries, then that it is very important for you to learn how to correctly use and maintain these tools. Take your yard hoses for instance if they aren’t coiled up correctly it can cause a tripping accident. A good way to protect a wood handle is to apply a number of coats of quality varnish or to paint it. The metal parts of the tool may be painted, with a primer coat, and two coats of exterior paint. There is no need to paint any of the metal parts that are designed to go into the ground though.

Preservation of the tool isn’t the only reason you should paint it though as when you paint them appropriate colors it makes them much easier to find. The color, therefore, should not be green or brown, but a bright contrast to the grass such as red. yellow, blue, or white.

The normal wear and tear on tools will happen when you use them and this often results in the edges of the tool becoming nicked or damaged. These may be smoothed with a metal file. Any rough surfaces should be gone over with steel wool or other abrasive which is good for metal. By using a simple mallet you can easily pound out any dents that your tools may have. Any break in a wheelbarrow whether in the metal parts ofr the wood, you need to make sure an repair promptly. If you want to preserve your wheelbarrow for a little bit longer period of time, you can easily do so by painting it as this helps to protect the wood. The moving parts need occasional oiling, to run smoothly. Make sure that you keep your tools and a dry spot throughout the winter so your tools aren’t harmed by moisture. Wipe all tools clean of any dirt or grass before being stored. It is always a good idea to coat the metal parts on your tools with a mixture of petroleum jelly and light oil in order to prevent any rusting while in storage.

The Inside Scoop for Transplanting Roses

On the odd occassion you may consider transplanting some of your roses. You could be just rearranging the the back garden or you may want the palnts to get more light. The reason you’re doing it doesn’t matter but the fact is, you really should learn a bit doing it.

Once you choose the new position for your roses, the first thing to do is get the spot ready. It’s important to do this first because the roors can dry out if left exposed for too long on a hot day. And, if your roses have a long way to travel then keep the roots damp during the trip

Some consider transplanting roses to be difficult however, if you get it right there will be no problems.

Always give your roses plenty of water the day before you dig them up to move to the new location. The secret to a successful transplant is water because a dehydrated plant will be less likely to take to its new location. When a plant is well watered, the roots will have time to adjust to the new position and the plant will not become as stressed.

However, losing some of the roots whilst transplanting cannot be avoided.

The roses roots tend to burrow deep in the ground–far past the point where most people will dig to remove the plant–keeping your plant hydrated greatly improves the success of a transplant. When you start digging up your plant, there’s no need to trim any healthy growth for it to remain unaffected during the ordeal, but when you have uncovered the root ball take as much as you can out of the ground.

Healthy portions of the plant are responsible for producing sugar so they must not be cut away. You can tell if the roots are struggling trying to support the plant by constanly checking to see if it’s drooping. If this starts to happen, cut off the bits that are drooping and keep your rose more water.

Preparing for Transplanting Roses

Once you dig the hole in the new spot, pour in three or so handfulls of bonemeal. Place the rose in the hole and make sure it’s planted higher in the ground than it originally was. Over time, when the soil settles, it will sink to its original depth. It needs to one ot two inches out of the ground and will star to settle in when it gets some water. Press the soil down around the base.

Many rose experts will tell you to forget about transplanting roses during their main growing season.

Roses are much easier to transplant when they’re not actually growing as this greatly reduces the risk of shock because they are dormant. Their dormant season is also after they have been pruned, meaning that the plant will be much easier to move and it will be smaller. If you prepare properly and offer the plant plenty of water, you can follow these simple steps and guarantee a trouble free transplant.
